General/Minimally Invasive Surgery

general-surgeryGeneral surgery requires a diversity of knowledge in fields such as anatomy, physiology, immunology, nutrition, pathology, wound healing and intensive care. Carrato Surgical Associates offers minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery and conventional general surgery as well, depending on our patients' needs.
Using a minimally invasive approach, many surgical procedures can be performed with laparoscopy, including diagnostic laparoscopy, gallbladder removal, colon resection for colon tumors or complications from diverticulitis, umbilical/abdominal/inguinal hernia repair, laparoscopic appendectomy and Nissen fundoplication procedures for hiatal hernias and refractory GERD. The ;aparoscopic approach gives patients smaller, more cosmetic incisions, a faster recovery time and less post-operative discomfort. Many patients who have laparoscopic surgery go home the same day or the next day after the surgery.
At times, patients who cannot undergo laparoscopic surgery due to more extensive medical problems will require conventional procedures. Dr. Carrato also routinely performs a wide variety of conventional open procedures and is expertly trained in traditional surgery as well, so if the patients' needs require a more conventional approach, this is also an option.
